BANDWIDTH UPGRADE

We tried to triple our Internet bandwidth this week but our provider had technical issues and we had to backoff the upgrade (read delay).  We will attempt the upgrade again soon.  This upgrade should greatly improve your cable modem performance.  After it has been completed and we’ve had a couple of days to test we should be able to increase the maximum speed limit of all cable modems to 3 mbps download and 1 mbps upload.

 

LIMIT NUMBER OF USERS

We want to emphasize the importance of limiting the number of computers you have on your cable modem. Your contract with us limits you to four computers even if you use NAT and only use one IP address.  If you are using more than four computers and only paying for one connection you are in breach of your contract with the Spanish Fork Community Network.  We discontinued the $5 / month additional fee (price decrease!) for additional computers but we still have the limit of four computers (or gaming devices) per paid connection.

 

NEW CABLE MODEM ROUTER

We are trying to get our new cable modem router installed.  This new improved device will lessen congestion on the network.  We are contacting the people who have assigned static IP addresses that will be moving to the new router and giving them new static IP addresses.  If you live in Node: 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 43, 44 or 49 (Node map located at http://www.sfcn.org/sfcn/avail.htm ) and have an assigned static IP address in the 67.104.x.x range and haven’t been given a new IP address you need to call me at 420-5520 ASAP.

 

CONTENT FILTERING

Thanks to everyone who has been helping us with our testing of the Orangatango content filter.  We have signed a contract with Orangatango to provide content filtering for the Spanish Fork Community Network and will continue testing for about another month before it is offered as a pay service.

 

SPAM EMAIL CONTROL

The email server upgrade is complete.  We are currently running on Novell’s NetMail product.  One of the reasons we needed to change from Groupwise to NetMail was for the SPAM control offered in NetMail.  We are currently filtering email SPAM from our system.  Although it isn’t perfect it is stopping lots of SPAM.
